Swallow Study
Bailey had her modified barium swallow study done yesterday at the children's hospital. We met with Julie, who did her test for her. We talked briefly about some of the problems she was having try to eat solid foods so she would know what to look out for during the test. We went back and had her get seated and put her seatbelt on and once I got Bailey in her seat she started crying hard. I think she is afraid of doctors and tests now especially after that UGI she had. Anyway, she kept coughing and gagging while she was crying and then dry heaved and finally vomited a bunch of nothing that was on her stomach. I finally got her calmed down enough to take a couple of sips of the barium from her bottle and it was just enough for them to see that it went down perfectly and her airway was protected through the whole process. She refused all other foods and her bottle after that so Julie syringe fed her some pudding with barium and she gagged heavily on it and then finally swallowed some and again she swallowed it perfectly. So she isn't having any trouble swallowing in her airway or esophagus areas. Her issues are all oral. She has an extremely sensitive gag reflex that is preventing her from eating solids. She will try something new initially and eat quite a bit of it but after a while I guess she realizes that it's uncomfortable, or makes her too gaggy, or whatever it is that is going on in there. It is enough to cause her to no longer want that food. Then she craves something else for a few days. Julie recommended more frequent therapy sessions especially since she is almost 18 months old now. Right now insurance is only covering 1 visit every other week. And she thinks Bailey needs to be back on her reflux meds. After talking with Dr. Silkstone later we decided to try Axid since it doesn't have the alcohol in it and is better tasting and hopefully we can sneak that into her bottles easier. She seems to think that it's going to take Bailey a while to learn to control her gagging and to be able to handle solid food feedings.
Next step...GI doctor.
