Nutritionist Appointment

Nutritionist Appointment

Bailey had her nutritionist appointment yesterday. It was a very detailed, very thorough appointment. But this was necessary and helped us come up with some solutions and future strategies.

Bailey's weight is back to 30 pounds even. I noticed she had gained some the past week! So that is a very good sign in that she is getting enough to eat but at the same time, I'm still worried she is *too* big. Her height is between the 25-50% percentiles and her weight for height is at the 90th now.

We discussed in detail about Bailey's diet. She thinks that by reducing her Nutren Jr. another 4 ounces per day may make another huge impact on her feeding milestones. So I will start working on that over the next few weeks. She suggested supplementing with Centrum Jr. in the meantime since it contains good vitamins and minerals her body needs with her limited diet. Thankfully one of them comes in Dora characters so maybe we can talk her into trying some 'candy' instead of her gagging and vomiting on it. If that is unsuccessful, we may have to resort to adding Polyvisol drops to her milk/formula bottles. Wish us luck with this attempt!

We also talked about Bailey's feeding therapist and she seems okay with our decision to quit/postpone sessions for now. I am hoping that over the next 2 months I can continue to see at least some improvement and maintain a good healthy development pattern. Only time will tell. If this does not happen, back to therapy she will go.

I have Bailey down to three 8oz bottles per day. It is important to note that the boys never EVER drank 8 ounce bottles. She hasn't spit up since that last incidence at the playdate while at the mall. So that is terrific news. She holds her own bottle and gives it to us when she is done (as opposed to throwing it across the room). She still doesn't always ask for one and I find that sometimes I have to stop the snacking and intervene with a healthy, nutritious bottle in the middle of the day but that is fine. She has come so far! She still isn't fond of feeding utensils and we talked about how it may be due to her being more in control of positioning the food in her mouth easier and more effectively by using her hands instead of struggling with a fork or spoon. She thought that was a well thought-out analysis and is probably correct.

I think that just about sums up our appointment. It went very well and I learned a lot. We can either call or return for a follow up if necessary. Otherwise, we will see her at Bailey's next feeding evaluation the first Monday in February.
